According to the sources; Há»™i An was a prosperous trading port from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries; Portuguese, English, French, Japanese and Chinese merchants came here to trade, with the majority of them being Japanese and Chinese. A particularly advantageous geographical location on the international commerce route as well as Lord Nguyá»…n's preferential policies of foreign trade helped many merchants, especially the Chinese to quickly become rich, so some of them built their own houses as well as community structures.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the famous Quảng Nam silk was exported all over the world via Hội An international commerce port. Thread spinning and silk weaving, as well as many other traditional occupations along the Thu Bồn river, have contributed to embellishing the multi-colored and multi-faceted cultural identity of Quảng Nam in general and Hội An in particular.
