Earth Hour
is the name of a global campaign “One hour of switching off lights” created by WWF, aiming to
enhance the awareness of people in the earth about the climate change and global warming. Every individual and organization can participate in
the campaign in simple ways such as to switch
off all lights and unnecessary electric appliances or to fund for the campaign of taking action
against global climate change.
Earth Hour 2009 with its message “Switch off our lights in order to Switch on
our future” will perform from 20:30 to 21:30 on March 28, 2009 (the last
Saturday evening of March).
This is the first time when Viet Nam’s WWF participating
in the campaign, and Viet Nam calls upon everybody to contribute creative and
feasible ideas to make the evening of carrying out the campaign “Earth Hour 2009” on March
28 an unseen interesting and exciting environmental event in Viet Nam.
Hoi An- the World Cultural
Heritage is a so-called place of Peace, or a place of “slowly living”.
Therefore, that Hoi An city holds activities to respond to this campaign is useful
not only for protecting her environment, but also for making a significant contribution
for popularizing the Hoi An-the World
Cultural Heritage, aiming to attract more and more visitors and develop tourist economy
in Hoi An. Hoi An city, basing on this event, will apply the idea of “One hour of switching off lights” to the Hoi An-Legendary
Night monthly held.
So, this guideline needs responding synchronically, determinatively, actively by the whole community; its
content has to be impressed by unpredictability and unique.
Place and activities
1. In whole
Hoi An city:
a. Participants:
-Mobilizing everybody to switch off all lights and
unnecessary electric appliances, all
advertisement boards...at home, businesses.
- Additionally, businesses
(hotels, restaurants, shops...) should prepare plans of mobilizing visitors to
back and respond to the event.
b.Lighting,
illuminating:
-Replacing really necessary
lightings with peanut oil wick lights, candles in small glass, candles in
candlesticks.
-Reducing but having to make sure
public illumination.
2. In the
Hoi An old town:
a. Traffic: “Streets for walkers and non-motorized vehicles”.
b. Lighting, illuminating:
- In front of every house,
organization, business: Using candles in small glass, and switching off all shop
boards and advertisement boards.
- At home:
+ Switching off all lights and
unnecessary electric appliances.
+ Using peanut oil wick
lights, candles in small glass, candles in candlesticks.
3. Hoai
River zone (including Bạch
Đằng street, prolonged Bạch Đằng street,
Nguyễn Phúc Chu street, Cẩm Nam island’s north-west bank, and space,
buildings adjacent):
a. Traffic: “Streets
for walkers”.
b. Lighting, illuminating:
- Switching off all public illumination.
- Illuminating on
decorative works in the river, works at the sculptures park with candles in
small glass and flowery lanterns.
- Illuminating river
banks with peanut oil wick lights, candled lanterns.
- In front of every house,
organization, business: Using candles in small glass, and switching off all
shop boards and advertisement boards.
- In every house,
organization, business:
+ Switching off all lights and
unnecessary electric appliances.
+ Using peanut oil wick
lights, candles in small glass, candles in candlesticks.
c. Activities:
- In the river:
+ Flowery lanterns.
+ In the small boats (illuminated with
candles in small glass, peanut oil wick lights, and
flowery lanterns): performances of
repartee chanties, romantic songs, traditional musical instruments such as
Vietnamese violons, zithers, flutes, guitars, violons, mandolines.
- In the streets:
+ Selling flowery lanterns
and requests visitors to respond the Festival of Flowery lanterns.
